Dear Colleagues,

Now that the eye shelter clinics are closed a more detailed update will be provided to show what the Houston eye community did to help our city.

In summary we treated over 2500 patients and dispensed over 1000 pairs of free glasses through the Hurricane Harvey Shelter Eye Clinics.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and sent in supplies and equipment.

The vast majority of patients needs were refractive error and medication refills, which were handled expeditiously with onsite grinding of glasses and dispensing medication.   We identified and initiated treatment/referral for complex eye diseases in a number of patients, and are grateful to the community HOS members and the ophthalmologists at the Harris County Hospital District who have provided unparalleled tertiary care.

The most prevalent problem of uncorrected refractive error was successfully managed thanks to very generous partner industry donations and the outstanding efforts of the optometry and optician teams.

Thanks to the following who were instrumental in organizing the relief efforts.

Amy Coburn, MD Community Outreach, Houston Ophthalmological Society
Ann Stout,MD HEA
Charity Grannis,MD HEA
Pat Segu, OD, University of Houston College of Optometry
Nancy George, OD, University of Houston College of Optometry
